How is it that stuff somehow always manages to pile up? Didn’t you just declutter last year? Maybe you’re thinking you should just throw it all away. You’ve probably heard about the trend toward living with less (Hello, Marie Kondo!). But should you hop on board?
If you’re squeezed into tight quarters or looking to downsize, here are some top tips to maximize the space and storage:
The Rule of Halves is Your New Best Friend
While this is a tip we typically give our sellers, it works for homeowners looking to stay awhile, too! Here’s the trick: let’s say you have 6 things on your fireplace mantle right now (we may or may not have a bit of a candle addiction, so no judgment!). Quick! Pick your fave 3. The remaining 3 ideally should be thrown away, but if you’re not quite there yet, box them up for a month and see how you feel. Not missing them? Away they go!
Use a Minimalist Color Palette
In a small space, you’ll want to avoid “too much” in all it’s forms—too much stuff, too many frills, too many colors. When picking your paint, stick to one or two similar shades, max, preferably paler ones that help maintain a light feel. Our current fave? We’re loving Misty Gray from Benjamin Moore for a calm, light neutral!
Built-In Storage Furniture Is Key
Function and style? We’ve got you covered! Look for pieces that double up as storage – think, coffee tables with drawers and compartments. Wayfair and West Elm have some that we are absolutely loving for a clean and modern look!
